Syrup Sandwiches and the Creativity of the Poor
I never knew I was poor. I only saw the people who were living an awesome life on the television screens and assumed that’s just how things were. They ate every night. They had family dinners where they talked about what happened at school and what not. That was their life and that is how it is. You on the other hand eat when you can. Free lunch at school not serving something you particularity enjoy? You better eat that mess or risk having hunger pains. That was our reality. Combining what was left over into a meal. Syrup + bread = a syrup sandwich. It was delicious. You could not tell us we did not invent the syrup sandwich. After a while we were raiding the kitchen to make them specifically.
